CALL FOR VR ARTWORKS

This call is open to artists of all disciplines, experienced in producing VR works for the main VR headsets currently available on the virtual reality environment production market, or that have already created one or more virtual reality pieces.

ELIGIBLE TYPES OF PROJECTS

The projects that are sought are projects revolving around the creation of immersive interactive artworks for the HTC VIVE, Daydream View Google Pixel, Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR platforms and should take advantage in part or in whole of these devices’ features :

  • Artwork that promotes the production of an original A/V and interactive experience;
  • Explores the concept of presence and/or physicality;
  • Touches upon questions around multi-users in the virtual reality space;
  • Questions the relationship between physical and virtual space;
  • Promotes feedback from the surrounding audience in the context of exhibition;
  • Innovates in terms of the scenography around the virtual piece, outside of the VR headset;
  • Artworks exploring specific and innovative subjects as part of the SAT’s research axes on the immersive experience and interactive VR will be favoured :
  • Use of sensors, cameras, pointers, positioning tools or movement tracking for interactivity or real-time editing of immersive scenes ;
  • Use of 360° spherical cameras, ambisonic microphones or other A/V immersive capture tools, use of 3D scanning tools ;
  • Original use of VR headsets.

Artworks exploring specific and innovative subjects as part of the SAT’s research axes on the immersive experience and interactive VR will be preferred :

  • Use and control of a large amount of tridimensional audio sources via Supercollider*, SATIE (a high-density 3D audio scene rendering environment for large multi-channel loudspeaker configurations) ;
  • Use of sensors, cameras, pointers, positioning tools or movement tracking for interactivity, performance management or real-time editing of immersive scenes ;
  • Use of 360° spherical cameras, ambisonic microphones or other A/V immersive capture tools, use of 3D scanning tools ;
  • Original use of live performative mapping

The submitted works should offer an experience of 10 to 20 minutes.

ARTWORK CREATION

PLEASE NOTE - Are favoured, projects that, through a specific integration to the work, add one or more elements that enrich the public immersive experience by bringing forward the medium’s specificities. [Submissions that include aspects related to virtual reality (AR, MR, AV) will also be considered.]

IMPORTANT DATES

Deadline for project proposals : SUNDAY, JULY 30, 2017

  • Analysis of submissions and replies to the artists : end of August 2017;
  • Meetings with the selected artists and teams : August/September 2017;
  • Start of production : from fall 2017 ;
  • Exhibition of the created works [VR] : 2017/2018 programming.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

1- Innovation : The creative project must demonstrate artistic or technological progress in the field of the immersive experience and distinguish itself through its approach and/or the originality of the exploration it offers.

2- Authenticity : The created work must be original and must not contain any excerpts, samples, or content that is copyrighted, or taken from a previous work by the artist or a third party.

3- Autonomy : Artists must demonstrate their autonomy regarding the main technical and creative aspects of the work. AR and MR projects will be considered - 360° videos are eligible if they can demonstrate the artist’s or collective’s abilities for the VR format.

COPRODUCTION

The SAT contributes to the project with support in the form of goods and services, and the evaluated artist fee after one or several meetings with the artist or collective, in addition to other dedicated resources (VR lounge, rental of equipment and/or specialized software, human resources, technical expertise, etc.)

  • Save for exceptions, as decided by the artistic committee, the SAT does not cover transportation costs (flight or other) nor Per diem (food and housing) for the selected artists or collectives;
  • Production fees must be detailed in a budget (Excel format) attached to the proposal, specifying the artist’s expectations regarding the SAT’s support and what they plan to invest in their project;
  • The SAT can provide a letter of intent to facilitate the search for financing or grants for its selected projects;
  • The SAT offers the support of its communications department for the promotion, audiovisual archiving and communications related to the project on its website and social media;
  • An artwork creation contract (VR) that specifies the project’s terms and conditions for its production and distribution is written for each selected project in collaboration with the artist or collective.

PARTNERSHIPS

Projects created in collaboration with other partners, public or private organizations are favoured. The terms and conditions of the collaboration are specified if needed in the artwork creation contract (VR). The partners’ exposure is then defined in collaboration with the SAT and the artist or collective.

PORTFOLIO

Each application must include :

  • A production schedule covering all the steps of the project (concept, research and creation) ;
  • A detailed budget analyzing, to the best of the applicant’s abilities, each of the project’s steps and the necessary resources for its creation**.

  • Are encouraged, applications by creators or collectives that demonstrate complementary experiences, an autonomy in creating similar works and a versatility regarding the submitted artwork creation.
  • The submissions must include a portfolio to validate the artwork proposal and demonstrate the artist’s or collective’s abilities in the mastery of the medium.
  • All artistic approaches aiming to define or redefine the creation of virtual reality content with a strong interactive experience are eligible for this call for proposals.

*The SAT will do an estimated evaluation of the selected immersive artwork (VR) creation projects.
