MUTEK GROWS UP AND OUT
FOR ITS 18TH EDITION, AUGUST 22 TO 27 AUGUST !

Part of the official program marking Montréal’s 375th anniversary, MUTEK festival turns 18, taking the occasion to change its dates, expand its program and refresh its commitment to live performance at the intersection of music, visual art and technology. MUTEK also mobilizes its international connections to host four days of programming dedicated to the cultural metropoles of London, Mexico City, Barcelona and Berlin — exploring the contemporaneous and multi-disciplinary links between Montréal and these capitals. The fundamental DNA of the festival will continue to express values of discovery, revelation and community, emphasizing premieres, exclusive appearances and artistic ingenuity.

Events will take place in the Quartier des spectacles, the Society for Arts and Technology, Monument-National, Métropolis and on the free outdoor stage of the Esplanade de la Place des Arts.

Events in the Satosphère

SATOSPHÈRE 1 : ORBITS
TUESDAY AUGUST AUGUST 22
SATOSPHÈRE - 7PM AND 9PM

Written as an immersive audio visual album, each track takes a unique look at the concept of an orbit. Both the music and film elements will explore rhythm, period and cycle through many different avenues, from the regular and repeating path of an orbit to the complex interactions of many bodies influencing each other.

The live performance integrate synth driven electronica with a string quartet using multi point surround sound to create an extremely rich immersive experience..

SATOSPHÈRE 2 : HYPERFORM
WEDNESDAY AUGUST 23
SATOSPHÈRE - 7PM, 8PM AND 9PM

Hyperform is an immersive A/V experience, exploring the role of spatial dimensionality to construct our reality, and its potential to create strange new realities as higher dimensional forms and spaces unravel around us. Hyperform sits at the edge between mathematics, science, visual and audio arts.

The journey begins with the simplest spatial forms in both audio and visual format, and progresses towards a realm of beautiful immersive abstraction using real mathematical models of hyperdimensional forms, which are believed to exist beyond our normal perceptual capacity.

SATOSPHÈRE 3 : LIQUID ARCHITECTURE
THURSDAY AUGUST 24
SATOSPHÈRE - 7PM AND 9PM

An audio-visual collaboration between Wiklow, Diagraf and Ewerx, Liquid Architecture approaches generative composition and performance methods in an immersive environment. Combining LIDAR data and creative modeling, real-world buildings and structures and imaginary landscapes are displaced and reconstructed point-by-point in a 3D immersive projection environment. Ancient churches, waterfalls and forest environments melt into one another, combining to create impossible structures.

As each scene builds and dissolves, a transformation of energy takes place, contrasting the ideas and beliefs they represent. The performers generate content from their individual machines. Data is sent back and forth, communicating spatial, rhythmic, colour and various signal information.

Downstairs, take a frequent flyer ride to all corners of the planet with the IDM and field recordings of Tokiomi, the African influenced downtempo of Anchorsong, electrified folk and cumbia from Nicola Cruz, polyrhythmic, pan-continental odysseys from Africaine 808, and the elegant, globally-tuned house of Kuniyuki.
