A new exhibition on electrographic art at the SAT gallery will take place this autumn.
Electrographic art has played a key role in the history of artistic practices related to the extraction of digital information. This movement began by deconstructing creative codes using raw materials such as waste or light, thus fitting into an analog tradition. While the term “Copy Art” was used in the 1960s and 70s in the United States, in a spirit of rebellion and democratization of art, the term “electrography” was introduced in Europe in the 1980s, reflecting innovations in electrostatic and electronic processes.
Today, electrographic art is integrated into other forms of technological art, such as video, photography, and holography, while remaining part of the larger family of manipulated image media, which can be printed or displayed on screens.
This free exhibition, taking place from October 11 to November 9, aims to promote Quebec’s place in this artistic movement, as its artists in the 1980s made their mark in this artistic history. The public will notably be able to discover recent and historical works by Jacques Charbonneau, Philippe Boissonnet, and Georg Mühleck, local artists who contributed to the expansion and recognition of this practice over the last few decades.
You will also find a selection of works by 55 artists from Canada, the United States, Europe, and Australia, who have been associated with the Motivation V Gallery, the Copie-Art Centre, and the Gallery of Technological Arts, and who are now part of the Copie-Art Centre’s collection.
With the rise of artificial intelligence, it is more important than ever to explore art forms like electrography which are at the origin of this now-ubiquitous technology.
Come discover electrographic art, for free and without registration!
