REASON OVER PASSION — MUSIC: AUN

THURSDAY JULY 13: CANCELLED
Director: Joyce Wieland

Joyce Wieland takes us on a train journey across Canada, where the scenery is interwoven with quotations from a speech by former Prime Minister Pierre Eliott Trudeau. The film's underlying humor stems from the absence of an explicit subjective point of view, in favor of the photogenic quality of a landscape that is unchanging and monotonous, as the Canadian landscape can be, the diversity of the territory only becoming apparent at the price of crossing immense distances. The musical performance will highlight the radical nature of the filmmaker's work, in the manner of a careful rereading that underscores its bold formal proposals.

Reason Over Passion Synopsis(1968, 80 min)
Reason Over Passion is one of Joyce Wieland's most renowned experimental films - a cross-country travelogue, political satire, modernist experiment - which embodies many of the themes recurrent in her rich, diverse and extensive corpus.

Short films:
Être, Mario DeGiglio-Bellemare, (Québec, 2022, 8 minutes).
Events in the tunnel, Penny Mccann et Eric Walker (Canada, 10 minutes).

THE HOLY MOUNTAIN — MUSIC: JOE CANTRELL

FRIDAY JULY 14
8:45pm
Director: Alejandro Jodorowsky

Alejandro Jodorowsky’s 1973 film The Holy Mountain is a visually striking work and its intensely unusual imagery is a great fit for a live performance setting. Joe Cantrell's intention is to use these fantastical images as a visual representation of noises and sounds, similar to the music notation called the graphical score. The artist sees in the film a beautiful challenge, fitting for this graphical tradition, that promises to create impactful and memorable sonic and visual pairing.

The Holy Mountain Synopsis (1973, 114 min)
In a corrupt, greed-fueled world, a powerful alchemist leads a messianic character and seven materialistic figures to the Holy Mountain, where they hope to achieve enlightenment.

Short film:
Les amazones, Diane Dupuis, (Québec, 1966, 19 minutes).

MUTANT ALIENS — MUSIC: PANACELLO

THURSDAY JULY 20
9pm
Director: Bill Plympton

Presented in collaboration with Fantasia Film Festival

Passionate about the director and his provocative, zany universe, the musicians had only one wish: to share this cinematic UFO! The drawings and animations are highly expressive and completely eccentric, and the movements, already very rhythmic, are a great inspiration for the creation of sound atmospheres. The scenes follow one another at full speed, and Bill Plympton's wicked sense of humor surprises at every turn, fuelling the irresistible urge to create music in response to the images of an adventure in space.

Mutant Aliens Synopsis (2001, 83 min)
Isolated on a strange asteroid inhabited by bizarre creatures, a left-for-dead astronaut miraculously heads back to Earth with a band of horrible aliens to tie up some loose ends, after twenty long years in oblivion.

Short films:
Analog Hellraiser, Guillaume Vallée (2014, 4 minutes).
Le dernier jour du papillon lune, Guillaume Vallée (2019, 5 minutes).
Le bulbe tragique, Guillaume Vallée (2016, 6 minutes).
