The Limits of Control
JULY 14 ![]() JULY 14 A mysterious hitman travels alone through Spain. Focused on his professional goal, away from the law and with an unfailing determination, he comes into contact throughout his journey with strange characters who will lead him to his ultimate target… Direction and screenplay: Jim Jarmusch SILICON BEATS Founded in 2016, this electro-digital music performance collective brings together artists from various backgrounds around improvisation and sharing. The relationship between music, sound effects, soundscape and silence seemed central to them in the construction of The Limits of control and they wished to respect this construction by faithfully following the pace of the film. All this while proposing a personal and electronic vision of the musical support, which will be improvised live by seven members of the collective: Camille Frey, Axel Helios, Margo Corto, Guest Room Project, Damien Mouchon and TSF + Short films selected by the Cinémathèque Québécoise: → Objets perdus (Gélinas, DeGagné, 1990, nouvelle restauration CQ) |
Level Five
JULY 15 ![]() JULY 15 Laura, a French computer scientist, inherits the task of making a video game about the battle of Okinawa in Japan during World War II. She searches the Internet for information about the battle and interviews Japanese experts and witnesses. The extraordinary circumstances of the battle of Okinawa lead Laura to reflect deeply on her own life and on humanity in general, especially on the influence of history and memories. Roger Tellier Craig + Jean Sebastien Truchy + Jonathan Parant These three sound artists joined forces to work on the film Level Five particularly for its imagery and technological consideration. + Short film selected by the Cinémathèque Québécoise: → The Dead Sea Scrolls (Steven Woloshen, 26 min). |
It Follows
JULY 21 ![]() JULY 21 After Jay, a carefree teenager, sleeps with her new boyfriend, Hugh, for the first time, she discovers that she is the new victim of a fatal curse passed from person to person through sex. Jay learns that death will inexorably approach her, whether she is a friend or a stranger. Her friends don’t believe her presumably paranoid delusions until they too begin to see the ghostly killers and band together to help her flee or defend herself. Janette King + Maryze Maryze is a queer singer from Vancouver and Janette King is a singer, musician, composer and DJ. They chose It Follows for its soundtrack which evokes the famous synthesizers of 80’s horror movies. On these memorable tracks, they were inspired to layer female voices that would follow the escalating tension of the film, echoing the nightmarish coming-of-age of the young heroine. + Short film selected by the Cinémathèque Québécoise: → Terrestres by Normand Rajotte (10 min) |
L’homme à la caméra
JULY 22 ![]() JULY 22 A cameraman walks around Moscow, Kharkov, Kiev and Odessa with a camera slung over his shoulder, documenting urban life with dazzling inventiveness. Ben Shemie Known as the lead singer and guitarist of the art-rock band Suuns, Shemie is a sonic explorer with a background in modern classical composition and experimental performance. To him, this film is a dense one where, upon watching, one appreciates the grandeur and ambition of Vertov. It is dynamic and multifaceted, so the possibilities for a soundtrack are endless. For this collaboration, the artist decided to opt for a minimalist approach that develops over time. + Short films selected by the Cinémathèque Québécoise: → Dreamless et Lucina Annulata by Charlotte Clermont (8 min overall). |
