Dynamite Barrel

Machine for Taking Time — Palais de Mari
Enjoy a unique immersive and meditative audiovisual experience in the Satosphere of the SAT (Society for Arts and Technology), featuring pianists Isak Goldschneider and Eve Egoyan, with visuals by Elysha Poirier and David Rokeby, and music by Hans Martin, Morton Feldman and Ann Southam. Performed by Eve Egoyan, Ann Southam’s Simple Lines of Enquiry takes us on a slow musical drift as we experience the emotional possibilities of the piano and its ethereal sonorities. Echoing this sonic promenade, David Rokeby’s video Machine for Taking Time leads us through an impossible Montréal panorama. Drawn from 750,000 images of the city taken over the course of the seasons and various weather conditions, the city gradually transforms unpredictably over time. A marvellous musical and visual ballad, where the colours of the piano resonate with those of the city. Also opening the programme, a creation by Quebec composer Hans Martin followed by Morton Feldman’s Palais of Mari, that slowly opens the door to a mysterious universe inspired by the palace of Mari, in the time of King Zimri-Lim. This introspective work, performed by Isak Goldschneider, also stands out for its infinite gentleness. It will be accompanied by video artist Elysha Poirier’s rich visual language.

¡Némangerie mâchée!
The result of an explosive collaboration between vocal ensemble Phth and visual artist Beth Frey, this show highlights the six singers and their costumes, metamorphosed and fused through captivating digital editing. Prepare yourself for this explosive collaboration between the vocal ensemble Phth and visual artist Beth Frey ¡Némangerie mâchée! features a parade of strange characters on video, set to sound by a vocal performance in space. Phth’s signature style, like Beth Frey’s visual art, is rife with humour and surprises. The formless, chromatic nature of Beth’s creatures share striking conceptual and sensory echoes with their bizarre voicing by Phth, known for their sonic palette that welcomes both the organic beauty and ugliness of sound without discrimination. Each vocalist in the Phth ensemble is a composer and improviser; the creative process for this work is a hybrid of collective co-creation, vocal improvisation and visual scoring using video images. Beth Frey’s artistic tools include watercolour drawing, video art, self-portraiture, hijacking of mobile applications and creative use of artificial intelligence The bodies and movements of the Phth have been used to construct the morphologically ambiguous beings of this menagerie, who seems suspended between pleasure and anxiety, the precious and grotesque. A baroque, exuberant and resolutely modern show that promises to efface the boundaries between reality and imagination.

Monday, February 17 - 7:30pm - Satosphere

Kafka’s Insect
Presented in the all-encompassing atmosphere of the SAT’s Satosphere and inspired by The Metamorphosis, Franz Kafka’s famous novella, this immersive 360° show features two Maltese artists, pianist Tricia Dawn Williams and composer Ruben Zahra. The music will subtly creep over your skin, awakening your senses and harmonizing with the striking visuals. Thrills guaranteed! Conceived as a portrait of avant-garde piano, the programme explores nearly a hundred years of repertoire in an interdisciplinary performance that redefines the traditional piano recital formula through the integration of innovative digital technologies. From motion capture and video art to electronic music and prepared piano techniques, each work presents a singular approach. Each composer ventures into uncharted territory, redefining the instrument’s identity. The event culminates with a video art performance inspired by Kafka’s work.
