7pm – free
for IGDA members/$5 for non-members
IGDA’s Montreal Chapter
invites you to attend the first chapter meeting of our 2005-06 season. It will
take place on Wednesday, September 14th from 7pm to 10pm at SAT.
We are proud to
welcome the current chairman of the IGDA, and game industry legend Bob
Bates to talk to us about game design and story.
A Practical
Guide to the Hero’s Journey by Bob Bates, freelance Designer/Writer/Producer
and IGDA Chairman (English lecture)
Most designers/writers have heard about Joseph Campbell’s Hero With a Thousand
Faces and how the Hero’s Journey underlies most epic stories. But when it comes
to putting Campbell’s observations to practical use, they become maddeningly
elusive. This talk, previously presented at GDC, shows you how to put the Hero’s
Journey to work while you are building your game design and story. It will explain
the function of the various parts of the Journey. Attendees will come away with
a better understanding of story construction and some practical advice for creating
a mythic substructure to their game designs. For more information on Bob, check
out: http://www.igda.org/board/#bates.
Development
Workforce Demographics by Jason Della Rocca, Executive Director, IGDA
(English lecture)
Who makes games? During the July 2005, the IGDA conducted a workforce demographics
survey to find out who actually makes games: their gender, age, ethnicity, education,
etc, etc. This brief lecture will provide highlights of the soon-to-be-released
report based on the survey findings. Can you guess who the “typical”
game developer is?
In addition to the evening’s
presentations, there will be an IGDA members’ raffle for game development books
from Charles River Media, games and other goodies.
As this is a presentations
night, you are encouraged to arrive early so we can get started on time at 7pm.
Of course, we will still have plenty of time for the usual networking and socializing.
Feel free to forward this email to your co-workers, or just bring them along.
Free drinks and snacks will be provided, but not dinner…
