7pm – free for the IGDA members – $5 for the non-members
This chapter meeting will focus on the creation of intellectual property
and innovative ideas within the game industry.
IP Creation at EA – Past, Present and Future
——————————————–
– Steve Rechtschaffner, VP & Chief Creative Officer, EA Worldwide Studios
(English lecture)
In his role at EA, Steve is responsible for creating new potential hit
games as well as partnering with current development and production teams
to ensure that EA games are immersive, fun and accessible to the people who
play them. Steve will cover his ten years of experience creating games for
EA and will address the challenges and the lessons learned from creating big
budget games.
Before joining EA in ’94, Steve served in such diverse roles as
Marketing Director for Swatch, Head of a television production company,
Captain and Program Director for US Freestyle Ski Team, and partnering with
ESPN on World Cup events. These and other character-building experiences
serve him in driving for the creation of successful games.
Licensed vs Original IP
——————————————–
– Jason Della Rocca, Executive Director, IGDA
(English lecture)
Taking a historical perspective, original games have always outperformed
games based on licenses from other entertainment industries – both
commercially and critically. Why then do publishers put so much emphasis on
licensed IP? What impact does this have on the overall industry ecosystem?
Further, how and where are the original games going to come from? On the
flipside, creating an original IP is far from guaranteeing your success –
in fact, the odds are truly stacked against you! In such a climate, where
do innovative and new ideas come from? Is there a balance to be found
between financial risk and innovation?
