Formed in 2002, Metalab is the research and development laboratory of the Society for Arts and Technology. Its mission is twofold: to stimulate the emergence of innovative immersive experiences and to make their design accessible to immersion artists through an ecosystem of open-source software.
LivePose is a command-line tool that locates body movements from video capture and applies various filters to them for detection, selection and data enhancement. LivePose does all this in real time, processing live video streams and sending results for each frame. To give an example of what the software can do, there are filters for detecting specific actions (e.g. raising the arms), detecting the position of a skeleton on a shot, controlling an avatar, etc. Work is underway to add support for 3D skeleton detection using multiple cameras, and for more robust action detection using a neural network.
