METAPHYSICAL EDUCATION

Liberty, jocool et Jan Pienkowski
present a performance whose theme follows and magnifies some of the
concepts explored in Manon Oligny’s dance production.

Physical exercise as a drug… Exposing the stereotypes
propagated by our society… The reigning intolerance toward differences…
The perverse effects of plastic surgery… The ideals of beauty and
the cult of the body in dictatorial societies…

The artists will give a voice to all the men and
women for whom physical exercise is not a panacea… to those who have
other objectives in their lives beside being thin… and whose self-esteem
is continually eroded by ad campaigns.

They will demonstrate that, in order to attain a
state of self-transcendence, it is also necessary to connect to one’s
creativity and spirit!

 

Liberty – Martine Kounouyan

Since her beginning in the world of VJing
with the band Wetfish at the SAT in 2001, VJ Liberty (aka Ladyroll),
fueled by her new-found passion for projecting images in real time,
has performed on many more occasions both at home in Quebec and internationally.

Some of the major events of her career include:
PixelAche with Swedish musician Andreas Tilliander; Péchés
capitaux/7 for the FCMM (Montreal Festival of New Cinema and New Media);
Dancing with DJ Ram and Martin Tétreault; Nuit ÉlectroniK
for Mutek; Technopera – Turandot, in collaboration with the SAT and
the Opera of Montreal; Nouvelles Images in Mexico with Éloi Brunelle;
NextArt for the Florida Film Festival in Orlando; Art Futura in Barcelona;
Viva Chizé; the “Biennale d’art contemporain” (Biennial
of Comtemporary Arts) in France; and just recently, Technopera – The
Turn of The Screw.

Her style is very dynamic and she easily adapts
to various music genres. She centers her work around specific ideas
and uses video loops composed of original and borrowed material to embroider
on their themes. She creates abstract textures that are all movement
and then fades them in with more concrete images. She prepares her clips
long before any performance but her strength lies in her ability to
awaken them into rhythms that bring the music to life.

Coordinator and co-founder with vj pillow
of the [mix_sessions] at SAT in Montreal. Jocool was born in France
but live and work in Quebec since almst 30 years. He has participated
in several exhibitions as Multimedia artist and now he concentrates
in video creation and immersive environments. As a Vj he plays mostly
at mix_sessions or locally with local and international artists for
specific performances and events.

His style is very colorfull, a bit figurative
but poetic. He edits, superposes and tweaks his images and turns them
into loops and collages and he plays live according to the music and
the reaction of the public. The end result is colorful, surprising and
inventive. It’’s full of life and captivating. It leaves
us wanting more.

Jan Pienkowski – onorecords.com

A composer, musician, sound designer, DJ and physicist,
Jan Pienkowski writes and performs music reflecting his diverse background.
From his Electroacoustic training and love of World Music comes a mixture
of mechanical bleeps, acoustic spaces and ethnic themes. From his theatre
(DIALOG) and dance (A.R.M. with choreographer Nikolas Dixon) experience
comes a flair for the dramatic and a feel for intricate rhythms.

Jan’s performances span Canada, U.S., France
and Hong Kong. His latest 2005 Shiva project with VJ Nokami has been
shown at festivals in Thailand, Germany, UK, Sweden, Austria, Romania,
Italy, Portugal, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, USA and Canada, with India
finally being added to the list of countries for 2006.

Jan has been also very active on the Montreal scene
with shows at the Black & Blue Festival, Montreal High Lights Festival,
Festival du nouveau cinéma, Fantasia Festival, Fringe/ Pop Festival,
Divers/Cité Festival, Tangente, Agora Festif, Exit, and regular
appearances at the SAT, U Lounge, Saphir, Luba Lounge and Green Room.
Jan’s Live and DJ mixes have landed him spots as featured artist
on New York’s Proton Radio, Chicago’s Clubland Underground,
Chicago’s 92.5 FM and Montreal’s CKUT 90.3 FM.

Jan is constantly expanding on what it means to
be an electronic musician by collaborating with soloists (saxophone,
violin, voice), visual artists, painters and dancers. He organises evenings
and performs often at the SAT, with a range of shows including: the
first Technopera (Turandot) with the singers from the Atelier lyrique
de l’Opéra de Monréal; Incidents improvisés,
blending Schubert and Chopin with electronic structures; and regular
[Mix_Sessions] combining the talents of musicians, dj’s and vj’s.
