Students from all four universities in Montreal are organizing a conference on socially responsible purchasing and investments, on February 18th and 19th. The Fédération des associations étudiantes du campus de l’Université de Montréal (FAÉCUM) and the Committee of Surveillance pour la Consommation Responsable Universitaire et des Travaux Éthiques (SCRUTÉ) in cooperation with UQAM’s Collectif Étudiant pour la Consommation Responsable et les Investissements Éthiques (CÉCRIÉ), the Concordia Student Union (CSU), and the Students’ Society of McGill University (SSMU) want to take advantage of this event to present the problems and solutions related to sweatshops, workers’ rights, corporate social responsibility and to discuss current socially responsible investing and purchasing policies in Quebec.
Conference speakers, such as François Rebello, Chief Executive Officer of Groupe Investissement Responsable, Daniel Marc Weinstock, Chief Executive Officer of Centre de recherche en éthique de l’Université de Montréal (CREUM), Daniel Boursier (FTQ), Jess Rutter, United Students Against Sweatshops (USAS), OXFAM, Équiterre, WRC and many more, will be present. The conference should permit the initiation of a student coalition in favour of responsible purchasing and ethical investments, which first mandate will be the implementation of functional policies on socially responsible purchasing and investments for all universities in Quebec.
The university scene remains an active and forward-thinking area, which makes it the perfect place to start raising awareness and creating stable changes within our society. Also, let’s not forget that today’s students are tomorrow’s consumers and that the questions of workers rights and environmental protection are more and more present in our daily lives. The conference is free and open for the public. Registration is required, visit www.scrute.ca or reach Christian Bélair at (514) 301-1390.
