Le Sacre du printemps
Nouvelles Danses Sauvages
LE SACRE DU PRINTEMPS (5 dancers)
This new reading of the Rite transposes it onto the traditional and intimate setting of the Hammam, orbath, where a virgin is being prepared for an arranged marriage. The theme of this work is water, traditionally a sacred element and purification symbol for several peoples. Kabbani reappropriates theoriental origins of the Rite, bringing his own sensibility to bear on the work and combining it with that of the five performers who share the stage.
NOUVELLES DANSES SAUVAGES (14 dancers)
With a singular style, the choreographer synthesies the representative elements of this new Millenium: reality shows, power, glory, sexuality and superficiality. Mixing gender and race elements, he elabortes complex but subtle works that entertains the audience while shaking their perception of today’s society.
MOTAZ KABBANI
Named “Artist without frontiers” by Voir, Motaz Kabbani arouses interest wherever he goes. This has been a prolific year for this increasingly popular artist: Ritual #5, created for Karen Duplessis, was an overwhelming success at the Older and Reckless series in Toronto, while 150 rêves d’une réalité, a work for 18 dancers commissioned by the Ballet du Nord in France, marked the choreographer’s first foray onto the European stage. Singularités persistantes, presented at Tangente in February 2003, was applauded by critics and the public alike. His version of the Sacre du Printemps has placed him on the list of “25 to watch” by Dance Magazine (NY). NOUVELLES DANSES SAUVAGES just opened last week to sold out performances at Tangente part of the Festival du monde arabe de Montréal.
«Highly personal and evocative, strongly coloured by (his) life experiences, the works of Motaz Kabbani…reveal superb stylistic signatures. (it) reveals an uncommon sense of poetry and beauty. Kabbani thereby conjures up a curious tapestry that subtly immerses us in a new culture without giving precedence to it or to the borrowed culture. »
