Given the importance that the Conseil attaches to broadening the influence of Québec artists abroad and the special relations that the Québec government maintains with the Federal Republic of Germany, the opening of a Québec studio in Berlin in 2003 marked a major step in the consolidation of the network of studio-apartments made available to Québec artists around the world.

The Künstlerhaus Bethanien receives each year artists from around the world, usually for long stays. Since the institution’s foundation in 1974, over 400 artists from 30 countries have worked in its studios.
The Künstlerhaus Bethanien is internationally renowned for its vitality and the quality of the events it organizes. It is located in the multicultural Kreuzberg district of Berlin. The roughly 75-m2 studio is furnished simply and has a kitchenette; a toilet and shower-room are located on the same floor. The apartment does not have any specialized equipment. However, the Bethanien makes available to artists several work spaces, including metal, wood, synthetic materials and video workshops. All of the studios have a free Internet connection. Artists may also use computers in a specially outfitted room. This space houses two Macintosh G-5 computers equipped with recent software.
During his stay, the artist will be able to work on the project indicated in the grant application and present it to the public at the Künstlerhaus. Moreover, the artist selected could possibly participate in activities in conjunction with the symposium organized by Inter-Society for the Electronic Arts (ISEA) in the fall of 2010 in Germany. The Québec artist will stay for 6 months at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien, from July to December 2010.
Under this program, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec provides a $10 000 grant. It covers the artist’s personal insurance and his travel and living expenses.
The Conseil will directly pay the Künstlerhaus Bethanien funds to cover the purchase of material needed to carry out the project and the cost of technical assistance.
