Speed Reading at the CCA

We are searching for intrepid reader-runners to participate in a special event that CCA is organising with Cabinet magazine editor Sina Najafi to celebrate the Speed Limits exhibition and catalogue.

On the 20th September, during a one-afternoon reading marathon, a cast of 25-30 people will walk, jog, or run on a treadmill while reading aloud a text addressing the notion of speed. Volunteers are needed to introduce us to their preferred fast or slow manifesto, philosophical treatise, timetable, literary excerpt, slow-food recipe, biological notation, or space-time continuum. There are no limits to the genres that we are interested in. Readings can be between 1 second and 4 minutes.

There are limited spaces for reader-runners. To volunteer, please reply to Meredith Carruthers, [email protected], with your proposed reading by Monday, the 7th of September.

If you have one or several suggestions for texts that we should consider but would prefer not to read it yourself on the treadmill, we’d still love to hear from you.

We are in the process of collecting as many texts as we can. Your suggestion can be as specific as you’d like, or as vague as “I remember a discussion in Thomas Mann’s “Magic Mountain” on why time sometimes appears to go slower or faster.”

If you are interested in participating but do not have a text in mind, please let us know and we can suggest a text from our research cache.

The event will be open to the public; we encourage reader-runners, reader-observers and all reader-enthusiasts to attend.

Participant confirmation : septembre 7th
