Kanva is launching a call for submission to artists in the visual arts and multimedia to create a work/installation, which will be inspired by an architectural project. This competition aims to
reinforce the relationship between art and architecture through different interpretations of a single building. This competition is open to artists, architects, graphic artists, designers and/or students. The deadline for applications is 3pm on July 24, 2009.
The focus of the work/installation will stem from an architectural project consisting of the renovation and extension of a centennial house situated on Stanley street in Montreal’s Golden Square Mile district. The project’s predominant gesture is an atrium space spanning the full height of the
residence, acting as a permeable membrane between the existing frame and the new extension. This void emphasizes the tension between the traditional and the contemporary segments of the dwelling.
STANLEY revisité / revisited 2009 seeks to engage participants in questioning issues linking past and present. A city’s evolution results in an accumulation of trends and discourses from different
epochs. As such, any deeply rooted contemporary creative process is inevitably permeated with notions of the past. The juxtaposition of architecture with other artistic approaches facilitates an
open and inclusive exploration of this dichotomy.
Kanva consists of young professionals and architects working in the built environment of Montreal.
The firm has become particularly sensitive to issues concerning Montreal’s heritage, demonstrated
by a strong portfolio of successful restoration and renovation projects completed over the past few
years. Kanva strives to establish a closer connection between art and architecture to promote the
complementarity of these two fields and to highlight their importance in the evolution of the
metropolis.
