All summer long, every Tuesday,
11 open-air movie nights, with a focus on musical themes!
From the Innu community to beautiful Krakow,
Cinéma urbain invites its audience to explore different cultures
and their stories in pictures and music!
For its revised and refreshed 14th edition, the “New” Cinéma urbain presents a line-up celebrating the special role of music in film, from the beginning to the present day. Every Tuesday from June 25 to September 3, the Society for Arts and Technology, in collaboration with the Quartier des spectacles‘s parternship, will present 11 free movies, in some cases with live musical accompaniment, in others preceded by concerts, in still others followed by discussions with the artists. The net result: a fantastic series of open-air movie-concerts mixing classical, jazz, pop, hip-hop and Indigenous music! During these evenings, on five occasions, the National Film Board of Canada will present short films related to the selected themes.
Over the course of the season, there will be a mix of classic and new Canadian and international films. Everyone is invited to come out and explore different communities and their stories. The program, prepared in close collaboration with guest curator Sandro Forte, vice-president of the Association québécoise des critiques de Cinéma (AQCC), is a celebration of peaceful coexistence — a powerful echo of Montréal’s rich cultural diversity.
Don’t forget to bring blankets and folding chairs!
Have a lovely Cinéma urbain!
Shows every Tuesday, from June 25th to September 3rd 2019 at 9.30 p.m.

Innu Nikamu: Resist and Sing
Guest: Sedalia Fazio Tuesday June 25th ![]() in partnership with Présence Autochtone, the NFB and Wapikoni Mobile
Film synopsis: In the 20th century, the Notre-Dame boarding school in Mani-Uetam snatched the young Côte-Nord Innu from their families, their territories and their culture as part of a countrywide federal government-led assimilation program. This tragic event left an indelible scar in the community. When the boarding school closed, buildings were demolished and buried in a field that became, in 1985, the site of Innu Nikamu. Thanks to the music that has accompanied the Innu throughout their history, director Kevin Bacon Hervieux (who won the Iris for the best documentary at the Gala Québec Cinéma this year) recounts the fabulous adventure of the Innu Nikamu Festival founders, musicians, craftsmen and collaborators who lit the flame of hope of a people in distress, and who dared to believe that the challenge of reappropriating their culture and language was not impossible.
Sedalia Fazio, invited guest: Before the screening, a performance will be presented by Sedalia Fazio, Mohawk Elder of Kahnawake who will honour us with a ceremony marked by prayers to wish good luck to all the presentations that will follow. Living in Montreal for 18 years now, Sedalia Kawennotas Fazio is from Kahnawake, on the other side of the bridge. She realized quickly after her move to the city that Aboriginal youth lacked a physical connection and encouragement to reconnect with their cultural heritage. This realization inspired Sedalia to start a 10-year project leading to the creation of a sweat lodge on the island. Her passion and dedication made this community project permanent; it now stands in the Montreal Botanical Garden. Sedalia Fazio is regularly invited as a speaker in a number of contexts, from the opening of the Commissions Viens, to protests (Idle No More), to symposia (especially on the subject of decline). Two shorts films will also be presented:

Live: Abdul Lateef and the Distraction Machine Tuesday July 2nd ![]() in partnership with Sommets du cinéma d’animation Film synopsis: This evening will honour the Annecy International Animation Film Festival! A world-renowned event bringing together thousands of professionals each year, this festival unearths the latest animated masterpieces as well as current and future trends. The SAT invites you to Place de la Paix to discover or rediscover this anthology of original short films that made the success of this last edition. Before the screening, a musical performance for all ages will be presented by the Montreal group Abdul Lateef and the Distraction Machine, straight out of the crazy futuristic world of Z’Isle, a Montreal comic book artist. Rythm warriors clad in bike tire armour will tell stories of the past through music and dance. How could their style be described, in a word? Survivalcore post-apocalyptic urban-tribal cyclepunk! In addition to the film: Précédant la projection, une performance musicale pour tous les âges vous sera présentée par le groupe montréalais Abdul Lateef and the Distraction Machine, tout droit sorti de l’univers déjanté de la BD futuriste Montréalaise Z’Isle. Cine-concert David Lynch’s Eraserhead – Silicon Beats
Tuesday July 9th ![]()
Film synopsis: Eraserhead, a strange work released in 1977, was the first feature film released by the surprising David Lynch. This monochrome classic of fantasy cinema will be explored live by the Montreal electronic musician collective, Silicon Beats, via an improvised live performance oscillating between electronica, jazz, live sampling and synth music, all impregnated with the film soundtrack. The 8 artists-machinists will perform a team relay in exquisite cadaver format, thus weaving together an improvised electronic piece on this Z-movie masterpiece. |
Black Mother + Âme Noire
Guests: Khalik Allah et Martine Chartrand Live: R41ÑB0W TR4$H Tuesday July 16th ![]() in partership with the NFB and the Festival du nouveau cinéma de Montréal
Film synopsis: Black Mother is a powerful poetic essay in the form of film that is surprisingly reminiscent of photography, which is Khalik Allah’s second passion. Allah recently won the FNC award Les nouveaux alchimistes for its creation. This is a fraternal love letter made to Jamaica and to women in particular. Khalik offers us a fascinating collage of portraits of different generations of inhabitants and addresses themes such as identity, the fight against racism, poverty, all punctuated by an ardent spirituality. Guests: The two directors Khalik Allah and Martine Chartrand will honour us with their presence. They will present their respective films in the introduction and answer questions after the screening. The feature film will be preceded by:
A Quebec director of Haitian descent, only winner of the Berlin Film Festival Golden Bear in the history of Quebec, Martine Chartrand will comment and present her two musical animated classics. The first Âme Noire (music by Oliver Jones and Lilison TS Cordeiro), is a film about Afro Americans. And the other, MacPherson, is inspired by the famous song of the same title by Félix Leclerc, an ode to his friend Frank Randolph Macpherson, a Jamaican chemical engineer who had an important influence on some of Felix Leclerc’s musical orientations. Concert: In the early evening, the polymorphous artist R41ÑB0W TR4$H (member of the Mexican group Colectivo Chipotle) will offer us a live presentation, oscillating between 8-bit music and noise, generated by a collection of toys, circuits and obsolete objects such as a Theremin and the Nintendo Game Boy DMG! |
Cine-concert: Thibaudeau / Findeisen – Hunchback of Notre-Dame
Tuesday July 23th ![]()
Synopsis of the cine-concert: You can expect a dazzling performance by Quebec composer, pianist and conductor Gabriel Thibaudeau who will perform one of his finest scores, accompanying the poignant The Hunchback of Notre Dame by Wallace Worsley, with the incredible Lon Chaney in the role of Quasimodo. Thibaudeau has participated in the biggest festivals including Cannes, performing in prestigious projection concerts, directing the orchestra or playing the score, solo on the piano… there is no film he can’t handle. He will be accompanied by the sublime Swiss-Canadian coloratura soprano B>Gerda Findeisen, recognized for her spectacular work that Le Devoir called the “climax of the show.” |
Turbo Kid
Invités: François Simard, Anouk Whissell et Yoann-Karl Whissel July 30th ![]() in parternship with the Fantasia Festival
Film synopsis: Join us for an eventful evening of synthwave, pop 80s culture and post-apocalyptic decor! Turbo Kid, crowd favourite of the Fantasia festival, is an amazing comedy gore film, created by the Roadkill Superstar collective. This feature film will be presented at Place de la Paix, with special guests François Simard, Anouk Whissell and Yoann-Karl Whissel, the directors. In a world devastated by the apocalypse, a young boy who is fascinated by comics survives the nuclear winter by exchanging the objects he finds in the ruins of the desolate lands for water. But the kidnapping of his friend Apple by a henchman of the evil Zeus will force him to face his fears and become a hero despite himself. |
Du teweikan à l’électro
Live: Shauit Tuesday August 6th ![]() in parternship with Présence Autochtone and RIDM
Film synopsis: A long time ago, men, women and children of all ages, clans, allegiances and nations united to the sound of teweikan vibrations. In the hands of singer-songwriters Pakesso Mukash (Cree / Abenaki), Shauit (Innu) and Moe Clark (Métis), it is still a powerful tool of communion. Providing rhythm for folk, electro or reggae songs, the teweikan – which means traditional drum – still strives today to create bridges between generations, the living and the dead, and territories, the conquered and the rebellious. By following the three musicians in their respective communities, we will discover the vitality of the Indigenous artists here, the causes that are dear to them and their deep inspirations. We will take this opportunity to trace the history of First Nations music, from the teweikan to electro, from Montreal to Hudson Bay, from the Canadian plains to the Côte-Nord. Concert: Before the screening of the film, Shauit, protagonist in the film Du teweikan à l’électro, will perform a rejuvenating show of reggae and pop. This Innu singer-songwriter is from Maliotenam in northeastern Quebec. Singing mostly in his Native language, Innu, the artist also uses French, English and Creole in some of his compositions, a true cross between contemporary music and traditional First Nations melodies. Having already released a critically acclaimed album in 2017 and an EP in 2014, he is preparing to release his next project around 2020-2021. |
Army of Lovers in the Holy Land
Guest: Jean-Pierre Barda Tuesday August 13th ![]() in parternship with the Consulate General of Israël
Film synopsis: During Montreal Pride, the SAT invites you to discover the Canadian premiere of Army of Lovers in the holy land. Produced by Naama Pyritz and directed by Asaf Galay, this documentary tells the story of a Swedish pop band that enjoyed great popularity in the 1990s. As famous for their authentic disco queer style as for the controversies they created around sex and religion, Army of Lovers hit the headlines in a harsh and conservative Israeli context. Our guest star: Jean-Pierre Barda, star of the film, will be present to answer questions from the public. Of Jewish-Algerian and French descent, Jean-Pierre was born in Paris in 1967. His family emigrated to Stockholm when he was a child. He left the family home at 14 and quickly became fascinated by the world of the stage, especially the cabaret. He learned the trade of professional makeup artist and became a choreographer for the fashion designer Camilla Thulin, who later became the costume designer and audiovisual consultant of the Army of Lovers group, along with Alexander Bard and Camilla Henemark in 1987. Jean-Pierre then became an apprentice in one of the largest Swedish salons and ended up as the Queen’s personal hairdresser. He was also a model for Jean-Paul Gaultier in 1991. Jean-Pierre is still a star in Sweden today. He can be seen in commercials, movies, plays, various television shows. More recently, he released the Prestige by Barda collection. The feature film will be preceded by:
In this animated short, a Chevrolet Bel Air 1957 offers an ironic take on the iconic American ballad Que Sera Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be). The Chevy’s bumper transforms into a pair of seductive lips, from which emerge the song’s reassuring lyrics, while a choir of cars performs a breathtaking dance number in the background. A biting satire of our Big Oil-based civilization, Carface is a musical comedy of spectacular proportions, in which acclaimed animator and illustrator Claude Cloutier (The Trenches, Sleeping Betty) pokes at our contemporary insouciance about the environmental perils that threaten the planet. Cine-concert: Keaton/Zavada
Tuesday August 20th ![]() in parternship with the NFB
Synopsis of the cine-concert: By combining humour, music and film, the Quebec pianist of Ukrainian origin Roman Zavada offers a trip back in time by giving a second life to the great classics of silent cinema in a show under the stars. With his piano, he pays tribute to the greatest cinema geniuses who, today, have fallen into oblivion. Born in 1982, Roman is a self-taught composer whose creative approach is based on instinct, spontaneity and improvisation. It is thus to the masterpiece of the 1926 film, The General by Buster Keaton that he will live improvise the musical narration. Like magic, he will become an accomplice of the black and white images. Inspired by the American Civil War, the film takes place in Georgia in 1861. Buster Keaton plays the role of Johnny, a railroad engineer of a train called The General. He has boundless love for it and for Annabelle Lee, his fiancee. When the war breaks out, he can’t join the army, as he is considered more useful in his present position. Annabelle refuses her his love, convinced that Johnny is a coward. However, when The General is stolen by Union spies with Anabelle on board, Johnny does not hesitate to go after his train and his beloved. One short film will also be presented:
This short film from director Gerald Potterton (Heavy Metal) stars Buster Keaton in one of the last films of his long career. In The Railrodder, Keaton crosses Canada from east to west on a railway track speeder. True to Keaton’s genre, the film is full of sight gags as our protagonist putt-putts his way to British Columbia. Not a word is spoken throughout, and Keaton is as spry and ingenious at fetching laughs as he was in the old days of the silent slapsticks. (Source : NFB) |

Norman McLaren wanted to make cinema “a form of expression as simple, intimate and exciting as the traditional arts such as drawing, painting and sculpture”. Not only did Norman McLaren create his own film imagery, he also made his own music by drawing, etching and photographing patterns directly onto the sound track area of the film, becoming a pioneer of electronic music long before the invention of the synthesizer. Norman McLaren: Animated Musician celebrates this exploration and presents much never-before-seen work by this master of cinema. (Source : ONF) (Source : ONF) |
