A 3-hour course led by Mike Wozniewski. The course is an introduction to the principles and technologies of mixed reality, including both location-based and marker-based tracking. The course will focus on innovative usage of these technologies in the context of artistic projects.

Objectives and Course Content :
To explore new possibilites in the world of interactive art allowed by the connection between the real and virtual world, through the relations between people, places and interfaces.
To understand the various forms of mixed reality, including the differences between “geospatial” and “marker-based” augmented reality.
To become familiar with existing platforms, toolkits and libraries that support augmented reality: Layar, Junaio, OpenStreetMap, Google Maps, ARToolkit, OpenCV, etc.
To understand the notions of geotagging, geocoding, localization, and location-based services.
To explore the challenges of tracking, whether locative (GPS) or based on computer vision.
To explore the architecture of a mixed reality system, including server-side databases, tracking modules, use of third party APIs, and integration into Android and iPhone client applications.
