Manifesto for a Living Digital Memory

Our creations, tools and digital experiences tell the story of our time. Yet digital-born heritage remains fragile: technologies become obsolete, formats disappear, platforms shut down, and works become difficult, if not impossible, to access.

With the Manifesto for a Living Digital Memory, the Society for Arts and Technology [SAT] is calling for collective action to reflect on how we can preserve, transmit and maintain access to the cultural heritage of the digital age.

Preserving digital heritage cannot rely solely on archiving files. Digital works and experiences also depend on software, technologies, know-how, creative contexts and communities capable of keeping them alive.

The Manifesto seeks to open a dialogue around this living digital memory and the conditions required to ensure that today’s creations can continue to be understood, studied, experienced and passed on tomorrow.

This initiative is intended for all individuals and organizations involved in the creation, research, presentation, preservation and ongoing development of digital cultures.
The SAT invites the community to read the Manifesto, contribute to this collective reflection and add its voice to the call to preserve our digital cultural heritage.
