A day of presentation of researches made by the Territoires Ouverts – Open Territories (TOT) project team took place last March 10 at the Society for Arts and Technology (SAT.)

TOT

The demonstrations were made by the researchers of the TOT team at the SAT in front of more than sixty research workers, representants of educational institutions, including several students, artists, business people and journalists.

The day was structured around four presentations on the evolution of the researches made by TOT in the last two years, i.e. on the development and/or the installment of four specific applications:

  • teleCHACHA  for the Telepresence between different locations on the network,
  • nSLAM for the multichannel audio broadcast in real time and in hi-speed,
  • lightTWIST for immersive video broadcasts on non plane surfaces,
  • pixelTANGO for networked video performances.

These researches focus on the utilization, and thus on the accessibility, of the broadband network for the creation and dissemination of cultural contents on a worldwide level and with extremely brief delays. The applications developed by the TOT team will allow an interaction with no space and time boundaries. For instance, with the multichannel audio software nSLAM, the interacting capacity approaches real time as the delays now revolve around 30 to 40 milliseconds. This delay will still be improved during Phase 3 of the project. The teleCHACHA software, on its part, permits the happening of artistic performances at the same time and from different locations. The spectators will be able to attend a show produced by those simultaneous sources in a sole and only place.

This type of applications are currently used and experimented within the scientific community, but in the near future the broad public will have access to it. It is one of the objectives of TOT, which aims at the democratization of digital tools and therefore at the closeness of communities and people.

The TOT project comprises an axis of research on high definition and real time video transmission, within immersive environments, projection spaces in which images are corrected even when they are being projected on non plane surfaces. lightTWIST is the software that allows this correction. Finally, the pixelTANGO application paves the way for video creation combining multi cameras, videoclips and 3D computer-generated images.

The day of presentation of the results of the TOT project was a huge success. We can predict the digital technologies developed by its researchers will lead to unprecedented installations and creations and that the Society for Arts and Technology, through TOT, will pursue its tremendous contribution. To be continued…
